Ingredients
  

For the Shrimp
  • 2 pounds Medium to Large Shrimp Peeled and deveined
For the Coating
  • 1 cup Cornstarch Coat shrimp evenly
For Frying
  • ½ cup Canola Oil Can substitute with sesame or olive oil
For the Sauce
  • 2 cloves Garlic Minced
  • 2 tablespoons Soy Sauce Low-sodium if desired
  • ½ cup Honey or Maple Syrup Maple syrup can substitute
  • 1 orange Orange Zest Fresh zest preferred
  • ¼ cup Orange Juice No sugar added, freshly squeezed is best
  • 1 tablespoon Mirin Dry sherry can be used as a substitute
  • ¼ teaspoon Crushed Red Pepper Flakes Adjust according to spice preference
For Garnish
  • Green Onions Optional for garnish
  • Sesame Seeds Optional for garnish

Method
 

  1. In a medium bowl, whisk together 2 minced garlic cloves, ¼ cup of orange juice, the zest of one orange, ½ cup of honey, 2 tablespoons of soy sauce, 1 tablespoon of mirin, and ¼ teaspoon of crushed red pepper flakes.
  2. Pat dry 2 pounds of shrimp with paper towels. Toss the shrimp with 1 cup of cornstarch until they are evenly coated.
  3. Heat ½ cup of canola oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Carefully fry the shrimp in batches for 2-3 minutes on each side until golden brown.
  4. Drain the excess oil and return the skillet to medium heat. Pour in the sauce and heat through for 1-2 minutes. Add the shrimp and toss to coat.
  5. Serve on a platter or plates, garnished with green onions and sesame seeds.

Notes

Fry shrimp in small batches to prevent steaming. Pat shrimp dry before coating and ensure the oil is hot before adding shrimp.
