Ingredients

For the Dough
  • 1.5 cups Almond Flour The main structure; use this low-carb base instead of traditional corn flour.
  • 1 cup Shredded Mozzarella Adds cheesiness and moisture; you can substitute it with other melting cheeses.
  • 2 tablespoons Psyllium Husk Provides elasticity and helps with the dough's texture; do not skip for best results.
  • 1 large Egg Binds the ingredients and adds richness; a must-have for the perfect keto arepas.
  • 0.5 cups Warm Water Hydrates the dough for optimal texture; adjust the amount for your desired consistency.
  • 1 teaspoon Salt Enhances flavor; keeping the amount consistent will ensure the best taste.
For Frying
  • 2 tablespoons Butter or Oil Used for frying to create a crispy texture; feel free to use your favorite cooking oil.

Equipment

  • Mixing Bowl
  • Nonstick skillet
  • Baking Sheet

Method

Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. In a mixing bowl, combine almond flour, psyllium husk, and shredded mozzarella cheese. Add salt and mix well. Then, crack in an egg and mix until fully combined. Gradually add warm water until you form a soft, non-sticky dough.
  2. Divide the dough into 4 equal portions. Roll each into a ball and flatten into a thick disc about ½ inch in height. Place the shaped arepas on a plate while they rest.
  3. Heat a nonstick skillet over medium heat. Add butter or oil and allow it to melt completely.
  4. Place the shaped keto arepas into the skillet, cook each side for about 4–5 minutes until golden brown and slightly puffed up.
  5. Remove the arepas from the skillet and let them rest on a paper towel for a minute. Slice open each arepa for stuffing.
