Ingredients
  

For the Beans
  • 3 cans Canned Beans any variety
  • 6 slices Bacon optional for vegetarian
For the Vegetables
  • 1 medium Onion any variety
  • 1 medium Green Pepper can substitute with red or yellow
  • 2 cloves Garlic minced
  • 1 medium Jalapeño optional for less spice
For the Sauce
  • 2 tablespoons Tomato Paste or substitute with tomato sauce
  • 1 cup Barbecue Sauce your favorite brand
  • 1 cup Tomato Sauce can substitute with crushed or diced tomatoes
  • 1 tablespoon Mustard Dijon or yellow
  • 2 tablespoons Brown Sugar or replace with maple syrup
  • 1 tablespoon Molasses optional; adjust with more sugar if omitted
  • 2 tablespoons Apple Cider Vinegar can substitute with white vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire Sauce omit for vegetarian
  • 1 teaspoon Smoked Paprika or substitute with regular paprika
For Seasoning
  • 1 tablespoon Chili Powder to taste
  • 1 teaspoon Cumin to taste
  • 1 teaspoon Onion Powder to taste
  • 1/4 teaspoon Cayenne optional for less heat
  • 1 teaspoon Salt to taste
  • 1 teaspoon Black Pepper to taste
For Cooking
  • 1 cup Broth vegetable or chicken

Method
 

Prep Ingredients
  1. Drain and rinse canned beans. Dice onion and green pepper, mince garlic and jalapeño, and chop bacon if using.
Cook Bacon
  1. In a pot over medium heat, sauté bacon for 5-7 minutes until crisp. Remove with a slotted spoon.
Sauté Vegetables
  1. In the pot with bacon fat, cook diced onion and green pepper for 5-8 minutes until soft.
Add Aromatics
  1. Stir in minced garlic and jalapeño, cooking for 30-60 seconds until fragrant.
Develop Sauce
  1. Add tomato paste, barbecue sauce, tomato sauce, mustard, brown sugar, molasses, apple cider vinegar, and Worcestershire sauce. Mix well.
Season
  1. Add smoked paprika, chili powder, cumin, onion powder, cayenne, salt, and black pepper. Adjust according to taste.
Mix Beans
  1. Add rinsed beans and broth, stir gently, and bring to a simmer.
Simmer
  1. Reduce heat to medium-low and cook uncovered for 25-35 minutes until sauce thickens.
Optional Baking
  1. Preheat oven to 350°F. Transfer beans to an oven-safe dish and bake for 20-30 minutes until bubbly.

  1. Let beans rest for a few minutes before serving. Adjust seasoning and enjoy!
